Saint Patrick
~St. Patrick's day is a cultural and religious celebration held on the 17 of March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. This day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century and is observed by the catholic church. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, as well as celebrating the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally include public parades and festivals and the wearing of green attire. It is customary of wear green on this day specifically because St. Patrick was said to have used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish (a story that first appeared in writing in 1726, though it may be older). The color green has been associated with Ireland since at least the 1640s, when the green harp flag was used by the Irish Catholic Confederation.
